Angioplasty or Bypass Surgery? Understanding Treatment for Blocked Heart Arteries
When do heart arteries need treatment?
The coronary arteries supply blood to the heart muscle. When fatty deposits narrow them, the heart may not get enough oxygen, causing chest pain (angina) or a heart attack. A Coronary Angiography (CAG) shows exactly where the blockages are and how severe they are.
Angioplasty (PTCA)
Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty opens the blocked artery from inside. A thin tube is passed through the wrist or groin to the heart, a small balloon is inflated at the blockage, and a stent is usually left in place to keep the artery open.
- Done under local anaesthesia, without opening the chest
- Most patients go home in one or two days
- The preferred emergency treatment for many heart attacks
Heart bypass surgery (CABG)
Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting uses a healthy blood vessel from the chest, arm or leg to route blood around the blocked arteries.
- Often recommended when several arteries are blocked, or the main (left main) artery is affected
- Usually better for many patients with diabetes and multiple blockages
- Involves a hospital stay of about a week and a few weeks of recovery
How do doctors decide?
The choice depends on the number and position of the blockages, how well the heart is pumping, and your overall health. At NENC Hospital, cardiologists and cardiac surgeons review each angiogram together and recommend the safest, longest-lasting option.
After either treatment
Lifestyle changes matter as much as the procedure: stop smoking, control blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol, take medicines regularly, and stay active as advised by your doctor.
