Are all brain tumours cancerous?

No. Brain tumours range from slow-growing benign tumours, such as meningiomas and pituitary adenomas, to malignant tumours such as gliomas. Some tumours start elsewhere in the body and spread to the brain. Many benign tumours can be cured with surgery alone.

Symptoms to watch for

  • New headaches that are worse in the morning or keep getting worse
  • Seizures (fits) for the first time in adulthood
  • Weakness, numbness or clumsiness on one side
  • Changes in vision, hearing, speech or balance
  • Changes in personality, memory or behaviour
  • Nausea and vomiting without another cause

These symptoms can have many causes, but they should always be checked by a doctor.

How are brain tumours diagnosed?

An MRI with contrast is the most important test. It shows the size, position and nature of the tumour. A CT scan may be done first in an emergency. In some cases a biopsy is needed to confirm the exact type.

How is surgery done today?

Modern brain tumour surgery uses an operating microscope and careful planning from MRI scans. The aim is to remove as much of the tumour as is safely possible while protecting healthy brain. Some tumours, especially pituitary and skull base tumours, can be removed endoscopically through the nose, without opening the skull.

After surgery

Patients are monitored closely in the Neuro ICU. Depending on the tumour type, further treatment such as radiotherapy or chemotherapy may follow. Many patients with benign tumours return to normal life within weeks.
